Can eating hot pot lead to sepsis? A deputy general manager of a paper mill in Changhua went to the well-known Moon End Zang hot pot restaurant in Taichung and ordered the signature Moon Watch Spicy Minced Pork with Rice. After returning home, he suffered severe diarrhea and abdominal pain, and was at one point observed in the intensive care unit. He was eventually diagnosed with sepsis, suspected to be caused by problematic egg yolk, and sued the restaurant for compensation of 830,000 NTD. The court of first instance ruled that the restaurant could not prove the safety of its ingredients nor that the deputy general manager had eaten something else that caused the illness, and awarded damages of 280,000 NTD. The restaurant appealed the decision, but the second instance court upheld the compensation of 180,000 NTD as final. The restaurant stated that they called 200 customers from that day, none of whom experienced similar issues, and there was no direct evidence proving that it was the eggs that caused the issue. However, since the judgment was made, they respect the judiciary.
Coronavirus disease 2019,
Abbreviation: COVID-19. The Executive Yuan announced that from October 13, 2022, Taiwan’s borders will be reopened with the “0+7” policy, which includes exemption from quarantine and lifting the ban on group tours, thus ending three years of pandemic prevention and control.
During the height of the pandemic, the public’s awareness of health gradually increased, leading to a more vigilant attitude towards food safety and environmental hygiene. As a result, tracking the flow of products has become a basic requirement.

Food safety issues continue to arise, and county and city governments have stepped up inspections: The famous BBQ bento is crawling with maggots! Surprised to find insect eggs in the chicken drumstick bento! There are worms in my chicken soup! Hot pot cabbage is full of sticky bugs! There was a cockroach in the bowl of noodles halfway through!

「Bongkrekic_Acid」Fatal food poisoning incident
On March 15, 2024, McDonald’s, a global fast-food chain, experienced a widespread system outage with its ordering systems across multiple countries including Taiwan, the UK, Australia, Germany, Thailand, Japan, and China. Even self-service kiosks were rendered unusable during this incident. McDonald’s headquarters in the United States clarified that the outage was not related to a cyberattack but rather stemmed from IT issues with a third-party vendor.
It’s not uncommon for international chain fast-food operators to encounter such errors. In fact, the cost of software maintenance far exceeds that of hardware maintenance by many folds. A single software failure can lead to catastrophic consequences, resulting in losses that may surpass the service fees of employing real people annually. Therefore, as emphasized on our homepage, simplifying operations triumphs over complex systems. Our entire menu is designed to be battery-free and uses a loose-leaf binding format, allowing for intuitive and flexible updates to individual pages. Most importantly, using our products will showcase your unique artistic style.
Minimum spending: 1 drink per person. With 3 people, the bill totaled over 1,000 NT dollars, forcing an additional order of a designated drink, sparking controversy. Spending 730 NT dollars didn’t meet the minimum spending requirement for dining in at the restaurant? Beef noodle soup shop: It’s all clearly marked. Hidden in the sea of words, this spending model no longer applies to a minimum spending requirement, but rather a mandatory order.

Every news event has its origins, and they are not without reason but require public awareness to prevent wrongdoers from evading justice. Tragic incidents in the past often stemmed from invisible toxins or allergies, resulting in loss of life, yet victims couldn’t provide evidence, sometimes due to ignorance. With advancing technology, governments are actively introducing high-precision instruments to verify product quality. Particularly during rampant pandemics, public health awareness has grown, fostering a more vigilant attitude towards food safety. Therefore, tracking product origins has become a basic requirement.
Take the Sudan Red incident, for example, where this substance was used in food since 1994 but only exposed in 2024. Many poisoning or allergic reactions were not detected immediately but surfaced days later when evidence had been cleared. Allergy attorneys in progressive nations aim to address such issues.
It’s worth noting that causes of poisoning or allergies aren’t limited to food ingredients alone; environmental hygiene plays a crucial role. Thus, improving environmental hygiene management is fundamental, while material applications in contact with menus are a critical aspect.
The information excerpted above is from domestic news sources within Taiwan. I refrain from commenting on extensive overseas information, such as the 2017 large-scale malicious deletion of Google’s entirely negative information in China. This incident involved issues such as materials used in online Taobao purchases of finished or semi-finished products, processing materials that were not SGS-certified, posing harm to human health and the environment. The occurrences did not take place within Taiwan, hence no comment is made.
The 2011 plasticizer incident, 2013 gutter oil scandal, and the 2024 Sudan Red incident all share a common point: they involve Taiwanese businesses that have risen in China.
Special thanks to Xiaoqiao Liushui in Longtan, Taoyuan for providing images of the damaged fake menus. These fake menus were made from paper materials commonly used in packaging. While the quality of these materials is generally not in question, their improper use caused problems. These paper materials closely resemble leather or fabric in appearance, but are actually still paper. Japanese manufacturers refer to this as “faux leather paper” or “faux fabric paper.” This type of paper is typically used for packaging and making hardcover books like dictionaries and encyclopedias. However, it is not suitable for the daily exposure to soup, water, and oil in the restaurant industry, which is why the damage shown in the images occurred.
According to reports, these fake menus showed signs of damage and odor after a year of use. However, based on past experiences, similar issues could arise within 2 to 4 weeks of use. That they lasted a year is remarkable and showcases the resilience of the Hakka people.
The most concerning aspect is that this paper material can easily breed mold and absorb oily smells, potentially endangering the health of diners, especially those with allergies. Additionally, the high cost of these fake menus has impacted business operations, leading to a vicious cycle.
Therefore, we recommend that businesses promptly replace these materials with SGS-certified ones to ensure the health and sustainability of their operations. SGS certification guarantees that materials meet relevant safety standards, providing customers with a more reliable dining experience. By making this change, restaurants can improve the quality of their menus, increase customer trust, and enhance their operating environment, achieving long-term business goals.
Thanks to Taoyuan Longtan Xiaoqiao Liushui for providing the broken fake menu screen.

※This serves as a reminder to restaurant operators that the risks of using non-SGS-certified materials are exceedingly high. The 2024 Polam Kopitiam,「Bongkrekic_Acid」incident, which triggered Taiwan’s first fatal food poisoning case, should be taken as a cautionary example.
The mold that causes mold growth not only releases allergens, triggering allergies and asthma, but some highly toxic molds can also cause severe lung diseases and even death. In the United States, there are even “mold lawyers” who specialize in helping consumers affected by mold seek compensation. When inhaled into the lungs, mold can cause asthma and bronchitis in mild cases, and in severe cases, it can lead to coughing up blood or even spread through the bloodstream from the lungs to other organs, causing inflammation or death.
